Report an Invasive Species

Knot On My Property

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) is partnering with the Fraser Valley Invasive Species Society (FVISS) on the Knot On My Property cost-share pilot program to encourage residents to control knotweed growing on private property.

Program Details:

  • Participating landowners can have 50% of the treatment costs covered (up to a maximum of $500)
  • Funding is allocated on a first-come first-served basis. The budget is limited and dispersal may vary year-to-year based on the popularity of the program.

If this pilot program is extended, landowners who participated will be given priority access to participate in subsequent years.

Rebates will not be given to landowners who treat knotweed themselves, or who use a non-approved contractor.

As this is a new pilot still in a trial stage, the FVRD reserves the right to update or change this program in subsequent years as required and as funds allow.

Treatment of knotweed usually takes several years until the infestation is considered eradicated.  Follow-up treatments will likely be required.  Property owners should be prepared to continue treatments annually until the plant stops returning.

Approved Contractors

Approved contractors must have valid Pesticide Applicator Certificates and have experience controlling knotweed according to the BC Integrated Pest Management Act and the herbicide product label instructions. Care must be taken to minimize impact to surrounding area.

Approved contractors must conduct knotweed treatment work according to known best management practices (BMP). Current BMP indicate that chemical control with a systemic herbicide is the most effective method for treating knotweed. Manual or mechanical methods are generally ineffective due to knotweed’s extensive rhizome system and should only be employed in specific circumstances and with extreme caution.

How to Participate

Landowners interested in participating in this program will contact the FVISS with the cost-estimate from an approved contractor to ensure that adequate funds are available. Once participation in the cost-share program is confirmed, the knotweed plants will receive treatment done by the contractor as per their knotweed management plan.

Step 1: Select a Contractor
·        Property owner selects and hires an approved Contractor
·        Approved Contractors are local companies who conduct invasive plant management in the Fraser Valley, have trained staff with experience treating Knotweed, and adhere to best management practices for Knotweed

Step 2: Complete the Participant Form
·        Property owner completes the Participant Form in order to reserve their spot
·        Budget will be allocated per first-come first-served basis, in the order of when the form is received
·       You can find the Participant Form here:

Step 3: Send FVISS the Cost-Estimate
·        Property owner or their selected Contractor sends the cost-estimate to FVISS to reserve their budget space
·        If funding is running out, FVISS will contact Property owner to discuss any adjustments based on what budget level is remaining

Step 4: Knotweed Treatments
·        Contractor completes treatment of knotweed plants
·        Contractor will complete this work independently
·        FVISS can help to provide information and additional resources

Step 5: Invoicing
·        Contractor invoices Property owner for their portion, with the cost-share $ discounted - Property owner pays Contractor directly
·        Contractor invoices FVISS for the cost-share $ amount - FVISS pays Contractor directly

If you are a renter or tenant
Please ensure you have the permission of the Property Owner and have discussed payment responsibility prior to reaching out.
Not all Fraser Valley municipalities are participants in this program.
If the address is not in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, or Electoral Areas C, D, E, G or G, then you are not eligible to participate in this program.
This may change in the future, should the program get expanded. In the meantime, you can still reach out to the FVISS to explore other management contractors and options.
